Edinburgh Gardens Plinth Program

Yarra City Arts is calling for Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from artists to make a new site-specific work for exhibition on an historic plinth in Edinburgh Gardens. Council are seeking EOIs from artists to create a new work for this site that will be exhibited on the Plinth for 18 months from 2017 to 2019. To be eligible, artists must currently live, study or practice in Victoria. This is an opportunity to create a unique artistic statement in a busy, inner city park. Artists should be mindful of the key audience for Edinburgh Gardens that includes users of the community oval, local residents, pedestrians, nearby business patrons, commuters and national and international visitors to the area. Applications are now open to present at the 2017 Performing Arts Exchange for individuals, artists, producers and other organisations with an interest in reaching performing arts presenters from across Australia and overseas. PAX is the largest national event of it’s kind and focusses on bringing producers and presenters together with specific networking and engagement strategies forming part of the PAX program.

Each application is assessed by a curatorial panel based on the following criteria:

  • Artistic excellence – the perceived quality, distinctiveness and significance of the work based on the information you have submitted. Do not rely on the assessment panel to already be aware of your particular project.
  • The potential for a deeper and longer engagement with Presenters and/or capacity for audience development.
  • Applicants MUST be a professional artist or arts organisation.

Melbourne Puppetry Festival

The Melbourne Festival of Puppetry will return to La Mama’s theatres in 4th – 9th July 2017. Co-curated by Lemony S Puppet Theatre and La Mama Theatre and supported by The City of Melbourne, the festival will host a children’s program during the day and a night program for adult audiences. New to the 2017 festival will be the ‘Avenue of Booths’, which, as the name suggests, is an avenue of puppet booths filling the La Mama forecourt and presenting 10 minute shows in each booth.

Their definition of ‘what make as a puppet show’ is very wide.

Mordant Family VR Commission

ACMI is joining forces with the City of Melbourne and Catriona and Simon Mordant AM to launch the Mordant Family VR Commission: a three year commitment to Australian visual artists, stimulating cross disciplinary collaboration to produce bold new and ambitious works using virtual reality (VR) and associated technology. Open to mid-career and established visual artists, the Mordant Family VR Commission supports gallery-based practitioners to move into VR, encouraging experimentation and enabling the creation of ambitious artworks that push the limits of technology to engage audiences in new ways. Awarded annually, the Mordant Family VR Commission recipient will be granted $80,000 for the development and creation of a new work.
