Goodbye Brunswick Arts

BRUNSWICK Arts had their closing party on Friday night 11 December as they are moving out of a space they called home for more than a decade. At their Little Breese St gallery staff hosted exhibitions and live music in a building where they also made living arrangements.

But the arts advocates are preparing to vacate as nearby construction work threatens the building’s safety, making it inappropriate for residency. Artist Alister Karl said having people live on site made the non-profit space sustainable.

“We treated the gallery as another housemate that could bring in a quarter of the rent and the bills, so that we didn’t have to make as much money from it. We could then pass those savings on to artists,” Karl said. “But Brunswick Arts has had a lot of development going on around it for a few years and now we have a seven-storey apartment block being built next door.
